Timber

Guyanese hardwood species, products and sizes

What we cut, how it ships, and the sizes we produce regularly. Anything else, ask — most sections are cut to order.

Species

Six core Guyanese hardwoods

Densities are typical air-dry values (≈12% moisture) and vary with the log. Data sheets are available per species.

Greenheart

Chlorocardium rodiei

Guyana's signature timber and one of the heaviest structural woods traded. The standard for marine and freshwater work.

Density
≈ 1,000 kg/m³
Durability
Very durable, marine-grade
Uses
Piles, wharves, lock gates, bridges, heavy structures
Ships as
Logs, squares, piles

Purpleheart

Peltogyne spp.

Hard, stiff and naturally durable, with heartwood that deepens to purple once cut and exposed to light.

Density
≈ 880 kg/m³
Durability
Very durable
Uses
Decking, flooring, bridges, heavy construction, joinery
Ships as
Squares, lumber

Greenheart piles

Greenheart vs treated pine

Treated pine costs less to buy. Greenheart costs less to own: in salt water it lasts two to three times as long, with no sleeves, wraps or chemicals.

GreenheartPressure-treated pine (CCA / creosote)
Rot & marine borersResisted right through the heartwood, by density and natural compoundsOnly the treated outer zone is protected
Cracks & bolt holesNo untreated core to exposeOpen the untreated core to shipworms, which hollow it out
Service life in salt water50+ years15–30 years
StrengthVery high: fewer or slimmer piles for the same loadModerate: larger or more piles needed
In the waterNothing leaches outPreservatives leach into water and sediment; restricted in some protected waters
InstallationHigher upfront cost; needs pre-drilling and heavy driving equipmentCheaper and easier to cut and drive

Row of 8x8x16 squares with sizes painted on teal-sealed ends

Sizes & grading

Measured, marked and tallied

  • Squares we cut regularly: 8×8, 10×10 and 12×12 inches in 16, 20 and 24 ft lengths. Other sections to order.
  • Logs are tallied one by one against their GFC tag numbers.
  • Every piece is graded in our yard and its size painted on the end before loading.
  • Packing list with piece count, sizes and volume goes with every container.

Treatment & shipping

Dried, treated and loaded to your spec

  • Kiln drying on request for lumber and smaller sections.
  • Fumigation where US import rules require it; phytosanitary certificate with every shipment.
  • End sealing on logs and squares to limit checking in transit.
  • 40′ containers from Georgetown. Pieces up to about 11.8 m (38 ft) fit a container; longer piles ship breakbulk.
  • FOB Georgetown or CIF your US port, agreed per order.
